CARROLL, James, M.D. Biography

James Carroll, M. D., of Yazoo city, Miss., was born in the beautiful Emerald isle, county Leitrim, January 10, 1833, and is a son of Peter and Kate (Smith) Carroll, natives of the same county. The father was a farmer by occupation. The Doctor passed his childhood and early youth in his native land; he was educated in Bottomstown, county Limerick, Ireland, and when he was nineteen years of age he emigrated to the new world to seek the fortune there might be in store for him. He landed in the city of New York and soon after went to the state of Georgia, where he taught school for a period of two years. During this time he employed his leisure moments in the study of medicine, and in 1855-6 he attended medical lectures in New York city. He was graduated in 1857 from the University of Louisiana, and located in Yazoo county, at Bello Prairie, where he began practice. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Schmidt, a native of Germany and a daughter of Joseph Schmidt. Eight children have been born to the Doctor and wife, six of whom are living: Peter J., Miles, Kate, James, Jr., Louis T. and Mary L. In 1873 Dr. Carroll removed to. Memphis, Tenn., but the following year he came back to Yazoo county and settled in Yazoo city. He has established a prosperous drug business, which he manages in connection with his professional work; he carries a complete line of goods of the first quality; he owns two dwelling houses, owns his business house, which is one of the best in the place, and a section of land in Washington county, Miss. For two years he was city physician of Yazoo city, discharging his duties with entire satisfaction to the public. He and his family are devout members of the Roman Catholic church, and are highly respected members of the community.
