MARSHALL, Dr. James, Obituary

Cedar Rapids, Ia, Sept 11 - Dr. James Marshall, president of Coe college, one of the most widely known educators in the northwest, died in this city today, after a two days' illness, of pneumonia. He was born in Grove township, Allegany county, New York, October 4, 1834, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, and was a chaplain in the army, being commissioned by President Lincoln. He filled many positions of note in the east and accepted the presidency of Coe college in 1887. [Omaha Daily Bee, (Omaha, Ne.), September 12, 1896]
