Church of the Ascension, Wakefield

This church was organized in 1839 by Rev. Francis Vinton, missionary of Rhode Island Convocation, over the parishes of Tower Hill and Kingston. Through the exertions and liberality of Hon. Elisha Watson a suitable site was procured for a church and parsonage. The building was commenced in the summer of 1839 and completed in 1840. Rev. William H. Newman was the first pastor, Rev. Mr. Vinton having accepted the rectorship of St. Stephen's Church, providence, before the church was completed, After the erection of the church at Wakefield most of the members at Tower Hill and Kingston joined the Wakefield Church. Mr. Newman remained but a short time when he resigned to take charge of the church at Westerly. The church has had a number of rectors and at times been without one. In 1868 Rev. Samuel P. Kelley assumed charge and during his rectorship the church prospered. From this time forward the church was been in a very flourishing condition.
