CHEW, Thomas J., Obituary

Death to be regretted - Thomas J. Chew, late of the U.S. Navy died at Brooklyn, late ly in the 70th year of his age. Mr. Chew was the person to whom Lawrence uttered the words, "Don't give up the ship!" Chew fought with great gallantry in several naval battles in the war of 1812. He was on the deck of the Constitutio n in the memorable fight with the Guerrieze, and contributed to the capture of that ship. At the time of his decease, he held the office of purser in the navy.
