BECK, Mary Obituary

The St. John Capital of last week has the following account of the Beck death, south of Ellinwood.

Coroner Sparks was called to the residence of Mary Beck in North Putnam township where he had held an inquest Wednesday over her remains. The jury decided that she came to her death by her own hand.

As near as we can learn she had used a sharp hatchet and a knife and succeeded in cutting her throat enough to bleed to death, sometime during Monday night and Tuesday forenoon. [Barton County Democrat, (Great Bend, Kan.), January 5, 1900, p.4.]

VANCIL, Elizabeth Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Vancil, wife of T. Vancil, died on Friday March 16th, at the age of 67 years, one month and 21 days of cancer. She has had a long and painful struggle, but the Death Angel at last touched the weary body and released the spirit from human suffering. Mrs. Vancil was among the earlier settles of Barton county, and leaves a host of friends to sympathize with the bereaved family. Besides the husband and two sons, Charles and Reuben, and two daughters, Mrs. Alice Brining of Ellinwood, and Mrs. Maud Bailey of this city, survive her. A sister, Mrs. Lucinda Benfield, of Salina, was present during the last month or more of Mrs. Vancil's illness. Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church, at 3 p.m. Sunday the 18th.
