GILBERT, George Yates Obituary, May 1, 1888

Mr. George Yates Gilbert, a grandson of the Gilbert who founded Gilbertsville, in Otsego county, and came over from England in 1787 with the Morrises, Coopers and other colonists, died yesterday in the Victoria Hotel in the seventy-fifth year of his age. He was graduated at Yale in the celebrated 1837 class, Senator Evarts, Chief Justice Waite, Edwards Pierrepont and others. He practiced law for some years in this city very successfully, and then went to Wisconsin and founded the Eau Claire Lumber Company, one of the largest enterprises of its kind in the country. He retired from business some fifteen years ago. The body was taken to Gilbertsville for interment. The Gilberts spring originally from Todmorden, Warwickshire, England.
