BOWERS, Henry J. Obituary, Jan. 16, 1896

Henry J. Bowers died suddenly, at Ashville, N.C., on Tuesday. He was seventy-three years old, and was spending the winter with his daughter there. His home was in Cooperstown, N.Y., where he had lived nearly all his life. He was born in 1824, and was an only son of John M. Bowers, who settled at Cooperstown in 1796, and owned about 27,000 acres of land on the east side of the Susquehanna River, directly opposite the Cooper estates. He was graduated from Union College in 1845. In 1848 he married Miss Crain, the daughter of William Crain, of Herkimer county, who was Speaker of the Assembly in 1846. She died four years ago at Lakelands. He leaves five children - John M. Bowers, a well known lawyer; William C. Bowers and Henry C. Bowers, all of whom live in this city; Margherita, who is now the wife of Colonel Charles L. Davis, of the United States army, and an unmarried daughter, Martha.
