HOXSIE, Gideon Obituary

Died in Milton, on the 14th ult., Gideon Hoxsie, Esq., aged 77. But few enjoyed such uninterrupted health as did the deceased, until the day of his death. On the morning of that day he complained of a slight indisposition, but not in any degree to alarm either himself or family. At noon this indisposition, though not having apparently increased, prevented his going as usual to the dinner table. Immediately after dinner his daughter-in-law having prepared some food for him which was thought he could eat, found him, on entering the room, a corpse! It was evident he died without a struggle, as he laid in the same position as when she left him a few moments before having one hand in his bosom apparently asleep. Mr. H. was among the first settlers of Milton - when the solitude of the then wilderness was rarely interrupted but by the howl of the beast of the forest, or the war whoop of the native Indian. His possessions were little but the vigor of youth and a fixed purpose to withstand the hardships always attending the settlement of a new country - and he succeeded, by his industry and prudent management, in acquiring a handsome property. It is not proper here to speak of his domestic, social and public worth - but judging from what is abundantly evident, he has carried to his grave the love of his aged companions, the respect of the middle aged, and the gratitude of the young.

With the exception of one year for forty years, Mr. H. has held the offices of Justice of the peace and of Town Clerk; and with singular fidelity he has maintained the law of the land as his rule of conduct, firmly believing that law was only to be superseded by that of his God. [The Burlington Free Press, (Burlington Vt.), July 15, 1836]
