PAGE, James, Obituary

Died in Hardwick, on the 4th inst., at the house of Rufus Whipple, James Page of Holland. The circumstances of his death, painful as they are, ought to be extensively known. They furnish a lesson on the vending and drinking of intoxicating liquors, which, I am sorry to say, the community are slow to learn. Mr. Page was on his way from Holland to Marshfield, where he had a mother and other relatives. He stopped at the stone tavern in Harwick, where he called for liquor, and was furnished with some new rum, of which he drank a little. After stopping about three hours and smoking abundantly, he called for more liquor and took about half a glass. He then proceeded on his journey, driving a pair of young cattle, but was soon seen to stagger, and occasionally to fall. He remarked to a person that he had taken too much liquor. He passed the house of Mr. Whipple, not far from the setting of the sun. In the morning Mr. Whipple observed the cattle which the traveler had driven by the preceding evening, now standing at his door. Apprehending evil had occurred, he went in search of the man and soon found him in a dying state. He conveyed him to his house, where means were used to restore him, but it was too late. The cold hand of death was upon him and very soon he was a corpse. He has left a wife and three children. He is spoken of, by persons who knew him, as an inoffensive and well disposed man, not at all intemperate. But he has fallen a victim to the accursed custom of buying and selling and drinking ardent spirit at publick houses. He was doubtless very much fatigued and exhausted; and, though he had with him in his sack plenty of provisions, he probably relied for a renewal of his strength on his pipe and his rum. [The Vermont Watchman and State Journal, (Montpelier, Vt.), May 16, 1837]
